Credit notes near period end: what reviewers test
Authority, invoice linkage, and cut-off timing — the three tests that matter when credit-note volume spikes in the final week of a quarter.
Credit notes rise for honest reasons: returns, pricing corrections, commercial settlements. They also rise when aging needs to look quieter before a board pack. Reviewers do not assume motive — they test three facts.
Authority
Who approved the note, and does that person sit inside the documented threshold? Notes just under a dual-approval limit, raised repeatedly, deserve a listing even when each one looks small.
Linkage
Does the credit reference the original invoice (or a clear commercial agreement)? Orphan notes with free-text narratives like “adjustment” are the ones auditors later chase.
Cut-off timing
Notes raised in the last two working days of a period, especially against invoices already fully aged, need a same-week explanation from sales or AR — not a retrospective story after close.
How this fits an engagement
A dedicated credit note & adjustment audit samples the period population. A full AR exception review will still glance at credit activity when it intersects open-item exceptions, but will not replace a focused credit-note test when volume itself is the concern.
